The 2008 British Open…

If a major golf tournament is played and Tiger Woods isn’t in it, do you give a damn who wins?

I don’t! I mean what Padraig “Paddy” Harrington did yesterday is a rare feat. Winning back to back British Opens is a big deal. But Tiger wasn’t there, so I truly wasn’t interested.

Also, its the British Open. If I wanna watch golfers hit the ball into deep ass rough and bunkers, I’d just go watch my homies slap the ball around at the public course. I really don’t see the entertainment and watching someone win a major with a score over par. How in the hell you shoot a +9 and finish 3rd? Normally, you shoot a plus +9 and you go home after your round Friday. Questioning your career choice the rest of weekend, watching guys who are much better than you compete on TV.

I’m sure all of these golfers breathed a sigh of relief when Tiger announced he was having ACL surgery. Now other folks have a chance to get their names in the books as Major Championship winners. But say you win a major but Tiger’s not there, does it really mean as much? Is it cheapened in anyway because the best player isn’t there?

Lets take a look at tennis. While I’m sure Rafael Nadal was happy to win his 1st Wimbledon championship this year, doesn’t it make it better that he beat Roger Federer, the King of Tennis, to win that title? Say he’d won that title against a lesser opponent. I don’t believe people would really give him credit for winning, had it not been against Federer.

For some basketball fans, those two Michael Jordan-less years will always have an asterisk as the titles were won while MJ was on hiatus/suspension, whatever you want to call it. Not to take anything away from Olajuwon and the Rockets, but wouldn’t that title have meant more had they beaten the Jordan led Bulls? Personally, I wish that series would have materialized, but that’s another posting for another day.

Even If I’m breakdancing, I would want to battle Turbo, Ozone, and the little white girl

My point is, if you’re a competitor you want to battle the best. I’m playing golf, I want to beat Tiger. I want Tiger in contention. I’d want to face off with the best and if I lose, so be it, but I want to compete against the best. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take the championship and the prize money if he isn’t there. But it wouldn’t feel AS good.

Maybe I’m crazy, let me know what you think….
